How the wall art size calculator works
The calculator uses two different anchors because a sofa wall and an empty wall are not the same problem.
When artwork sits above a sofa, bed or sideboard, the furniture is the visual anchor. A framed print or pair that covers roughly 65–75% of that width usually feels connected without matching it edge for edge. The calculator uses 70% as the middle of the range.
For an open wall, there is no furniture line to follow. The suggested range is slightly broader at 55–70% of the usable wall width. That leaves enough blank wall for the photograph to breathe while giving it enough scale to look intentional.
These are starting points, not laws. Shelving, lamps, doors, ceiling height and the main viewing position can all move the answer. The paper-template test below is still the best final check.
Measure the full framed width
Product dimensions and print dimensions are not always the same thing. A mount and frame can add several centimetres to every side. If you are arranging two prints, the total width includes both frames and the gap between them.
One print
Measure from the outside edge of one frame to the outside edge of the other.
A pair
Add both framed widths and a calm 6–12 cm gap. Treat the pair as one composition.
An unframed print
Allow for the frame or mount you plan to add. Do not size the wall from paper alone if the finished piece will be framed.
Choose orientation from the wall shape
A wide sofa or sideboard naturally supports a landscape or panoramic print. A tall, narrow wall usually suits portrait photography. A roughly square area can take a near-square image or a pair of portrait prints.
The photograph still needs its natural ratio. Do not force a skyline into a portrait crop or a tall architectural subject into a wide frame merely because the wall suggests it. If the strongest photograph has the wrong shape, change the arrangement rather than damaging the composition.

Use hanging height as a second check
On an open wall, start with the centre of the artwork around 145–150 cm from the floor. Above furniture, the relationship with the furniture matters more than that exact floor measurement. Leave roughly 15–25 cm between the top of the sofa, bedhead or sideboard and the bottom of the frame.

Test the result before making holes
- Mark the outside framed size with low-tack tape or a sheet of paper.
- Stand where you normally enter the room.
- Sit where the photograph will usually be viewed.
- Check it in daylight and again with the lamps on.
- Leave the template up for a day before deciding.
A size can be mathematically correct and still feel wrong because of a nearby lamp, shelf, doorway or ceiling line. The room is the final test.
Why the suggested Othervariant sizes vary
Photography is sold in more than one aspect ratio. Panoramic skylines, standard landscape photographs, 4:3 images and portrait architecture do not share the same dimensions. The calculator therefore finds common catalogue sizes near your target range rather than pretending every photograph can be ordered at one universal size.
